VOLUNTEER
Mahele Farm has a small staff. A volunteer coordinator, an apprentice manager, and a crew of young farm apprentices. Volunteers are the heart and soul of the farm, and we depend on their hard work, dedication, and love for their farm to keep the weeds down and the food growing!
Volunteer Days
* Mahele Farm is designed to put healthy food on the tables of the people who call Hāna "home."
* Visitors who would like to see and learn from the farm are encouraged to contact us prior to visiting at mahele.farm@gmail.com
TUESDAY
On Tuesdays, the farm is open from 10:00am til 5:00pm. Volunteers are encouraged to work for at least two hours. Produce is distributed on an honor system.You take out what you put in! We cook a farm lunch for volunteers. If you plan on coming around lunch, please bring a little something. Volunteer Coordinator will accomadate all ages and gardening experience.
FRIDAY
On Fridays, the farm is open from 8:00am - 12:00noon. Volunteers should arrive before 10:00am to be part of the harvest and work project after. Simple and fun for all ages.
What We Grow
On the farm we grow fruits, roots, and vegetables all year round. What we grow depends on the season and general rotation of the growing plots.
To name a few: kalo (taro), ʻuala (sweet potato), cassava (tapioca), Asian greens (kai choi, wong bok, tatsoi, mizuna, pac choi, hon sai tai), lettuce, carrot, beets, green onion, kale, chard, cilantro, basil, laupele (tongan spinach), pumpkin, pipinola, chili pepper, beans (bush, long, four corner, pole), papaya, maiʻa (banana), radish, eggplant, katuk, ginger, turmeric, tomato, poha berry, kalamungay (moringa), dill, oregano, mamaki, lemongrass, arugula, and much more.
Special Cultivar Collections
We grow great Hawaiian collections of kalo (taro), ʻuala (sweet potato), and maiʻa (cooking banana).
